And We Sit

14 years ago, yesterday.

The world waited.

Would the United States send some sort of response immediately to points, yet unknown, in the middle east? A response for the acts of aggression taken against this country, it’s people, it’s culture (indeed the culture of Western Man written large across that particular metropolitan skyline).  An act of aggression not seen in such scope or scale since nearly 60 years previous.

That action, at least taken against a uniformed opponent, not aimed almost exclusively at an unarmed and unknowing civilian populace, started an armed conflict stretching across four years, it’s ending punctuated with two atomic exclamation points.

Could this…would this monstrous transgression propel us to the same course of action, up to and including the use of much stronger punctuation at it’s end? (Or sooner…much sooner.)

It did not.

And so now we sit.  Those of us who still chose to remember, seemingly becoming a smaller group, as the years go by.  A smaller voice.   Where once we were at least given the courtesy, of perhaps having a valid course of action, of remembering what our forefathers did, of what the generation previous to mine did.  That when faced with adversity, the kind which demanded you take no other course of action than of meeting your enemy on the field of battle.   That honor demanded….dignity demanded…moral reciprocity towards the Creator who bestowed upon all men such fundamental human rights…demanded, we act accordingly when any or all  are called into question.

Now we are treated ilke an eccentric Uncle … who after one too many beers … is relegated to the card table on the back porch, to eat his dinner alone…away from the more “diversified” adults….and far away from impressionable children.

Now we sit.   While an individual who was, at the very least,  exposed and indoctrinated, in the very ideology behind the events of 14 years ago, occupies the Oval Office.  Who for all we know, based on biased news and government sponsored PR reports, has been aiding and abetting said enemy up to and including giving them the keys to nuclear exploitation.

Now we sit.  While untold tens of thousands of the ideology of hate, behind the  events of 14 years ago, are allowed to enter this country freely.  And as our traditional rule of law crumbles and cracks, eroding away, they seek to impose their own brand of law over any and all who will allow for same.

If we sit much longer, the “war”  all but formally started 14 years ago, will have been lost.  With little more than regional battles fought in countries who have known little peace since their inception (at the end of WWI) amongst people, tribes, and cultures who have known little, if any,  peace in thousands of years.

We have done little to stem the tide.  At the very least, cause them to stay “self-contained” in their respective little hell holes of 7th-century sand and ignorance, ensuring they were unwelcome and unwanted in any part of the civilized world.  We couldn’t, or wouldn’t even do that.

And so…14 years after airborne jihad…  they have very nearly won, or are well on their way to doing so.  This will have been brought about by their doing the one thing we seem unwilling to do.  Having the will to fight…to advance their cause, their beliefs, their will, over any and all who do not believe as they do.  And it appears, to do any and everything, in order to achieve their goals.

And we sit.     And we wonder what’s next.  And we look to the political landscape pondering who will be next to take the helm of this nation.  To direct our affairs nationally and internationally.   And we look at the rest of the world … Europe is perhaps less than a generation away from existing … at least as we would have remembered her.   Israel perhaps a year away from same.  The economies of the world on the brink of collapse.   And perhaps the biggest agent, directly and indirectly behind all of these ills, is allowed to thrive and grow.

The same agent which was behind all which transpired on the 11th of September 2001.

In 14 years, it has grown stronger, more virulent.

In 14 years, we have not.

14 years from now…

Will it matter?

GOP Core Values…because if we change the words a bit…maybe you’ll come back.

It’s time for some more tom-foolery from our friends at the GOP!

Yes, I received an email (unsolicited) from the Grand Old Party today. It seems they have “based on my feedback”, “compiled a list of what it means to be a Republican”.

That I haven’t directly talked with, texted, or mailed (e-mail or otherwise) any “feedback” to any individual member of said party, or to the party itself, I am assuming they are qualifying that statement as being “feedback received from their membership at large”, and not any one particular individual.

So let’s take a look at the “New and Improved” ™ “ GOP “Core Values”!!

“I believe that our:

County is exceptional

(Oh, I see, you left out) “…but not for long. “ There, fixed it for you. As based on the actions of most of the senior members of the GOP in the house and senate, this would certainly be the case.

Signs of the Times

null

The “commentary” bordering the picture, misses the point, probably intentionally. The fact is, and the majority of those who are, or have served, already know and understand this…the “Sign”, held by the serviceman, is absolutely correct.

Ok, you may have initially signed up, to see the world, or get a “free education”, learn a skill…or any of the other reasons one is given to join by their respective recruiters. Still, at the end of the day…especially after you’ve finished Basic Training/Boot Camp…you know the bottom line is you are serving the needs of the Navy, Army, Air Force, or Marines. You are there to SERVE your country.

One of the first things you learned (at least it was this way 30 some odd years ago, back when I was a boot) was that the constitution was no longer your “protector”…that the bill of rights was not what covered your butt. The UCMJ took the place of same. And though it mirrored it, there were (and still are) some fundamental differences. One of them being, that you could NOT besmirch your Commander in Chief. Nor could you (at the very least while in uniform…but not necessarily exclusive to that point) speak out publicly against our military actions (in their planning stages or otherwise).

Bottom line…if you feel that strongly about what the current administration is doing, or is planning to do, there are proper channels in which to address these concerns. Indeed, if the actions ARE of an unconstitutional nature/blatantly illegal, one would expect a large chunk of the military to go up the chain of command with their grievances. But you had better have your ducks in a row…cause it isn’t going to be a cake walk.

Your other options, quite frankly, are to see if you meet the requirements for some sort of Administrative discharge, or if you are eligible, submit your papers for retirement. Any of these three choices are far superior to taking the cowards way out…of hiding your face behind a piece of paper….

A Call to Arms

I was over at Liberty’s Torch Fran Porretto’s home on the web today. His most recent post is one which in today’s climate one might have considered asking “Do you really want to plant your flag on that hill?”

Ok, you might ask that question if you were a metro sexual left leaning weeny, followed by something along the lines of “Can’t we just get along?”

Rest assured, you won’t find anyone here asking that kinda thing…

Anyhow, back to the good Mr. Porretto’s post. I came away with a feeling that he has reached saturation IRT to the insipid followers and fellow travelers to the current administration. (And one assumes, with the current administration as well.) To that end he has fired full broadside on one of the same who happened to comment over at Breitbart Big Government. With his kind permission, it reads as fallows:

I hate the Republicans and everything they stand for.” – Howard Dean.

You are the enemy.
You are not benevolent.
Your first goal is to disarm us.
Your second goal is to eliminate privacy.
Your third goal is to criminalize our opinions.
You want power for yourselves, and nothing else.
You believe yourselves entitled to rule us absolutely.
You routinely wish for the deaths of conservative figures.
You would have us forcibly “re-educated,” if you could pull it off.
You are trying to destroy all remaining restraints on the federal government.
You’re doing everything you can to criminalize disagreement with your agenda.
You accuse your political opponents of every foul crime and motivation in the book.
And you do it with a contemptuous smirk that says “You can’t stop us no matter what you do.”

I tried to grant you the presumption of integrity.
I can’t. You’ve forfeited all claim to decency or benign purpose.
The only difference between you and the Communists of North Korea is your skin tone.
From here to the end of my life, I will do all in my power to have you seen for what you really are.
Not decent people with different opinions about what’s best, or what means are acceptable.
Not persons agonized over America’s residuum of violence, or poverty, or racism.
Not neighbors peacefully willing to agree to disagree with other Americans.
You are none of those things.
You are the enemy.
You are villains.
Traitors.

It is my belief that we have just been issued a “call to arms”. And I would have to agree with all that he said. My only thought is it fails to include just about every one else in the political arena. There are but a handful of folks who seek to see this country return to something akin to what the forefathers envisioned some 230 odd years ago. With all due respect Fran, ya only broadsided half the bastards.

And by all means go look at the original.  It strikes me (and others, in his comments) that the original layout looks very much like a pennant.  Perhaps someone with strong photoshop or gimp skills could fit the above into a pennant.  Might make for a dandy addition to one’s flag pole … right under the Gadsden flag.

It Ain’t Guns, Knives, Laws, or Proclamations Killing People

I am an old gamer.  Started playing the “pencil and paper” version of “Dungeons and Dragons” back in the early 80’s, and have been hooked ever since.  What does this have to do with the events of the past few years both nationally and world-wide (including the tragedy which took place in Connecticut, and more recently, Boston)?   Give me a second or two and I will try and explain.

One of the facets of  the “Dungeons and Dragons” (hereafter mentioned as “D&D”) universe is how it brakes down the moral/ethical standings of each character you might happen to develop.  Tow of these categories  specifically come into play when we look at what is going on around us, along with what has been taking place over (at least) the post 9/11 era:

Lawful Evil  Characters of this alignment see a well-ordered system as being easier to exploit, and show a combination of desirable and undesirable traits; while they usually obey their superiors and keep their word, they care nothing for the rights and freedoms of other individuals and are not averse to twisting the rules to work in their favor.

“But this comes from  a fantasy game, what in the wide, wide world of sports does this have to do with the real world?”

Glad you asked that Sparky, sometimes even games may provide insights as to what drives man to do what he  does.  So here are  a couple of examples to prove my point.

It is no secret, to those who happen to drop by here, that I am strongly opposed to Islam.  It is a malignancy which masks it’s true intent under the guise of “religion”.  And yes, there are most certainly good people who are  followers of the “faith”.  However, one would suspect they are doing so because of expediency, ignorance, or stupidity/naiveté …. what other reason could there be, assuming your nature was “good”  to begin with?

Anyhow, back to the point I am trying to make.  Islam is a beautiful example of what could (or should) be considered “Lawful Evil”.  There are specific rules, guidelines, and regulations which all are required to follow.  You may be able to “get away” with not following some of these, especially if you are in some position of power and or authority within the particular sect you adhere to, but if someone else is in a position to challenge you or has power over you, this may be called into play,  and your indiscretions  could cost you.

Perhaps an example a bit closer to home is in order.  Okay, how about the Senate and Congress, a large chunk of the Judicial, and most (if not all) of the Executive branch.  Yep, talking about the Federal Government.  Oh, and let”s  not forget about all the alphabet agencies and the government bureaucracy at large.   Much like the first example, there are some who are honestly trying to do “good”, or are “good people”, but more and more, logic dictates they would fall under the same categories as the so called “good Muslim”…. expedient, ignorant, or stupid/naive.  And yes, I am calling the government, as it stands (others would say it has been this way for quite some time, and they very well may not be wrong) , Lawful Evil.

The above are just two examples, done without breaking a sweat.  There are others.  Trade unions…hell, unions in general comes to mind, that meet the requirements for this brand of Evil.  I am sure you could think of more.

Now let’s look at;

Chaotic Evil  Characters of this alignment tend to have no respect for rules, other people’s lives, or anything but their own desires, which are typically selfish and cruel. They set a high value on personal freedom, but do not have any regard for the lives or freedom of other people.

Any serial killer, assassin,  or “crazed gunman”, up to and including Adam Lanza would fall into this category.  Arguably there could be a few heads of state here as well.  Here you will find the misfits, loners,  malcontents,  The Narcissist, (yeah, that Narcissist)   More importantly (though it may be  something only admitted to themselves.  In the darkness of the pit where their soul should have normally resided) they find some sort of perverse pleasure in seeing others brought to some level of physical or emotional pain.  It is random senseless Evil.  With no apparent logic or grand design behind it….Evil purely for the sake of evil.

The two alignments, may be easily used to “profile” most, if not all, of the horrific acts of violence which have gain national prominence over the course of the last 40-50 years.  You can take all the players involved and they (and or their groups) will fall under one of the above alignments.

Adam  Lanza: Chaotic Evil.

Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev: Lawful Evil

Jeffrey Dahmer, John Gacy, Timothy McVeigh: all Chaotic Evil

Most of the current administration, cabinet members, the majority of the directors of the various alphabet agencies, and at least half of the members of SCOTUS: Lawful Evil.  (To be fair on this one, you should also include most of the members of both Houses, and a good chunk of all the above in almost all administrations going back at least 100 years.)

Which brings us to the title of tonight’s post.

It isn’t the availability of fire arms.  For, time and time again, those of an evil nature and or intent, will find a way to acquire same if they feel the need to do so.  Take away the firearms, knives, clubs, arrows, rocks and stones, would still be available, And failing that, there is always brute force.   No, guns are not the real concern here.

It isn’t the lack of (constitutionality of any and all of them put aside for the moment) laws.  We have more gun laws and “legal” restrictions placed upon us (you know, the law abiding folk) in the process of trying to procure same.  There are numerous  laws addressing potential abuse/violence, not only against individuals (women, gays, police, teachers, public officials) but groups as well.  Everything from “orders of protection”, to the added charges of “a hate crime”, and “aggravated ______”.   These will not stop those who are well and truly bent on carrying out their acts.

The same thing goes for all the  “drug free, gun free, smoke free, and any other “free zone” placed into effect via proclamation (and or law).  How many schools (at all levels) have been kept safe and secure purely on the basis of them being “gun free and or violence free zones”?  How many (especially at the upper echelons) constantly observe the “smoke free environment” of the office (or more informally, the campus) they are on?   And “drug free zones” in public schools (especially at any major metro school district)…you can not be that naive, can you?

It is not any of these things which are killing people. And none of the above, are in any great measure, preventing people from being killed.

It is the content and quality of the character of all the perpetrators which is the root cause. Character matters. Evil does exist. And the sooner people wake up and realize this, and take realistic action against same, then the first steps will have been taken to return our society and with any luck at all, our nation back into something our forefathers would not only recognize, but be proud to have given birth to.

Left, Right, and Center

Enough of this already.

Those on the left have their agenda(s).  There are any number on the right who do so as well.  Then there are the folks in the middle…the so called “moderates”…those who, at least as a group, appear to be asking; “Can’t we all just get along?”

There is enough blame for how things have arrived to where they are now, shared by all sides; left, right, and center.  And none of them are really offering any sort of honest and or realistic solution to the many concerns this country is challenged with at this point in time.

Do I have all the answers?

Hell no.  Heck, I am  not even sure of some of the questions.

However, it would seem to me if we adhered to at least some of the following, we would eventually arrive closer to where the majority of folks really want to be…or would at least be comfortable with same.

1.  Follow the Constitution, as written.

This is suppose to be the legitimate framework with which everything else evolves from.  So follow the damn thing already.  Not because it happens to agree with your (or your group, party, agency[s], particular agenda at the moment, but because it IS the binding document all are supposed to work under.   If you don’t like the rules, either go about the proper ways set forth in said document, to change same, or failing that, get out of “this club” and go somewhere else.

If you are a member of the government (be it civil or military), at some point or another you took an oath to either protect and defend same, or at the very least to be honor bound in following it’s proscribed tenets.  To do anything less should be cause for, at  a minimum, immediate dismissal from your position, at at most being hung from the neck until dead. (Other modes of “permanent dismissal” are optional, this was just the first which came to mind.)  That we have any number of current office holders (regardless of party affiliation) who have acted, or are currently acting in manners that in the past would have been considered treasonous…but are now looked at as little more than “business as usual  keeps my blood pressure at levels that are at best unhealthy.

2.  Leave me alone…and get the hell off of my lawn!!

In other words, keep your nose out of other people’s business, as long as it doesn’t impact you, your family, or friends.  We used to pride ourselves as being a nation where independence of spirit, and self reliance, were admirable qualities.  That one’s ultimate goal was to be “a self-made man”.   You might be accepting of charity (The real deal, not the faux version better known as “government assistance”.)  but you made damn sure you paid those who helped you out back at the very least as much as was given.  In turn, if your neighbor had fallen on hard times, you helped out when you could to get them back on their feet.  You might also be tolerant of your neighbor(s) idiosyncrasies as long as they were not negatively impacting you and yours, as they would be of yours.

So when did we become a nation of busybodies?  A land of Mrs. Kravitz-ies…your grass is too high….your flag flies too often…your garden/farm produces too much of the wrong kind of produce.  You can not sell untreated dairy products to the masses… your smoke is polluting my air (outside no less)…and the list goes on.

In short, most folks just want to be left alone.  We don’t want the State (be it federal. state, or local)  interfering with our lives and or our businesses.  Personally, the next political or media type who utters the words; “It’s for your own best interests!”, or, “But it’s for the children!”, should be tarred and feathered, and promptly run out of town, on a rail.  And that is if I am in a good mood at the time.

3.  Take care of yourself, and if applicable, your family and friends.

Charity should begin at home and to the local community.  Used to be you belonged to a church,  community group, or perhaps to some fraternal organization (Knights of Columbus, Masons, Elks, etc) which had as part of their activities, some sort of charitable arm.  These were in place to help those who may have fallen on hard times, or help rebuild the community should some sort of calamity effect same (tornado, flood, etc).  And, as mentioned above, the “faux charity” currently pushed at all levels of government, is anything but.

This is as good a start as any. I imagine you can think of a couple more.  There will be more on this (and related topics/issues) to come.   Comments, as always are welcome.

Roads Less Traveled

We are damn near a (if not “the”) fork in the road.  It is one that was a long time in coming to, but given all which has transpired in the last 100 years or so, perhaps not all that surprising that we finally arrived at this point.

Looking at the signpost what choice will you make.  Which path will you, as an American, as a human being with God given rights to “Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness” (or Property, for you purists out there), and the associated “Bill of Rights” which enable you to pursue same, will you continue your travels on?

The fork, to the left (appropriately enough) requires you to pay the tallyman.  To willingly give up many of your “rights”, a large chunk of your income, and potentially your properties as well, in order to “allow” the State to provide services to all.  It requires…demands…you ultimately serve not yourself,  your own best interests or welfare, but suborn all to the will, wisdom, and benevolence of the State and or those appointed by the State to look after it’s own agenda and concerns.  A return to serfdom at best, slavery at worst…but freemen no longer.

The other fork, is an unknown.  It looks the same initially.  There is even a Tallyman … for there will be a “Piper to be payed” down this path too.  In this case, we have no one to blame but ourselves, and for everyday we hesitate in choosing,  until the day comes when the choice be forced upon us, his fee will become increasingly higher.   After the toll, the road turns to the right, vanishing behind a hill.  It may be short with a sudden deadly drop off into the void.  Or long, eventually ending up at that “Shining city on the hill” President Ragen would have described as our potential positive destiny.  But the ultimate end of this path remains an unknown.  What is known, and understood,  is your freedoms,  rights, and responsibilities will be intact and in full force.  For choosing this path will require you to personally resolve, and hopefully, be resolute enough, to keep them.   The toll for this path will be paid in blood, sweat, and tears…in loss of fortunes and family.

Sadly today, this would be the road less traveled.  But it is the road I willingly follow.  It is the one which allows me to at least attempt looking in the mirror each morning.  It is the one which allows me to continue to honor the oath I swore so many times over the past 30-40 years.  It will be the one which allows for the greatest chance of my children, grandchildren, and future generations to at least have an honest chance of having the kinds of opportunities that my generation, and generations past had in reaching for their own versions of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”.

The government already has it’s list(s) of potential troublemakers, rabble-rousers  and (as far as they are concerned) malcontents.  If you are a vet, a conservative, a pro-constitution abiding, pro-freedom to chose and practice your religion of choice (it is not just anti-christian out there folks, it is at the heart of it anti-religion…they want the State to become “your god”), gun owner….well why worry about what a few words said out on the interwebs is going to do.  They will come to your door soon enough, in their own good time.   And yes, I fall into at least one or more of the above.

So it is better to hold my head up high, and let at least a few of my fellow travelers know I stand with them, as much as I am able,  than to reamin silent.

Like this fellow it is the road less traveled for me as well.
